An insider working on Half-Blood Prince lets out the truth about Emma’s performance on set, ” There was just a lot of people (crew, etc.) moaning about how rubbish she is at acting”. And it seems even David Yates is not too happy with Emma, either.
I have nothing new too report, sorry. I don’t think Emma’s a bitch. There was just a lot of people (crew, etc.) moaning about how rubbish she is at acting. I have to admit she is pretty rubbish at learning her lines, her double learnt them quicker than her.
Well a lot of the crew thinks David Yates would rather have Hermione played by Emma’s double rather than her.

sounds like whoever said this *coughs* bullshit *coughs* is number one jealous and/or friends with whoever emma’s double is. of course none of us know who emma’s double is because the double was NOT cast to play Hermione. Emma “one-take” Watson, as she’s known on-set, was cast and i doubt that’s going to be changing anytime soon.
emma memorizes her lines better than anyone but i don’t think she can act so i don’t know what to think about this. she’s beautiful and smart but her eyebrows and over acting gets to me sometimes..not all the time but still. i bet for sure she’s a lot prettier and smarter than her double but it’s true her acting can be over rated sometimes. she gets tons of popularity awards. she isn’t horrible but she’s not that great either.

So considering she’s an A student, and they’re saying she can’t memorize her lines is just bad taste, however for constructive criticism I will say she might want to tone down the “eyebrow acting.” Watch her eyebrows when you see her next, she uses them to emphasize the lines, which isn’t needed but then again she’s relatively new to acting. Plus considering she was nominated for how many awards now? I doubt they’re complaining about the acting, but this is just an opinion.

I’m having a hard time believing that “news”. I was a professional child actor in the past, so I know that doubles don’t learn the lines - they’re there so that the crew can set up the shot (ie. lighting, camera angles etc.), or, in some instances, so that shots can be taken with the person from the back so the actual actor doesn’t have to be used. But they don’t learn the lines, so that to me is a red flag about the validity of that person’s claims.
To be honest all you have to do is watch the films and *bam!* your source is right there. Girl can’t act wortha.

I would have believed this, possibly, if it weren’t for the lines part. Emma has been doing this for five years and in the beginning seemed to have no problems with lines whatsoever and, even now, it’s not like Hermione really has too many lines so memorizing them shouldn’t be that difficult. Also, I wouldn’t see why the whole crew would be talking about Emma’s acting of all the subjects they could be on, to be honest.
I dont think this is beyond the realms of possibility. Emma has reached what is possibly the most testing time of her short career. Shes approaching 18 and so wants to go on nights out more and more this combined with leaches (paparazzi)following her everywhere and constant speculation about her private life in the press and on blogs etc. This is where we will all find out if Emma has what it takes to be a major actress or not. If she can get through the next 2 films without falling into the traps that some young actresses have made (Namely Lindsay Lohan) then she will be in a good position in the future. But judging by the people shes been spotted with recently i wouldnt say that this is out of the question at all.

Uhm, to all the folks saying this guy is just a jealous, uninformed Emma-hater, etc: sorry to burst your bubble. Phoenix has been working on the HP movies since OOTP and has always delivered reliable information concerning the scripts - if you ever bothered to get spoilers for the movies on the imdb boards, you’ll know that he was the one who provided us with tons of script excerpts before OOTP even came out and that they were true. Same goes with the additional scene that was just confirmed for HBP - he was the first to tell us about it, so yeah, he IS quite reliable as an information source and DOES know stuff.
PLUS, he’s been *extremely* careful not to bash anyone, particularly Emma. He only replied to peoples’ questions on the imdb boards, and that’s obviously an impression he got from working on set these past weeks. Please note that he doesn’t seem to necessarily agree with the crew, so no reason to jump down his throat.

It’s actually sad that a ham of an actor like Daniel Radcliffe is touted as being the BEST in the trio. You know just how poor the other two’s acting really is. Don’t say Hermione is a crap role or that it was written for a child. If Emma had any value as an ACTRESS, she could’ve turned it into something AMAZING. That’s what truly GREAT actresses are able to do. To dig deep within their role and find TRUTH and project that back onto the screen. Emma has shown that she is utterly incapable of this in the past couple movies. She has not even shown any raw talent.

Emma was casted out of 1000’s back in 2001, when she was an 11-year-old CHILD. You must understand the casting directors at the time weren’t sure if there were going to be 7 movies altogether. They picked EMMA simply because she

Hence the reason why they went to SCHOOLS (not ACTING AGENCIES!) and ultimately found Emma. Even from interviews from that time, Emma came off as pretty bossy and “precocious” and that was EXACTLY what the casting people wanted: Emma wouldn’t have to act in order to come off to people as Hermione. As time went on, Emma has shown that she really doesn’t have much talent, and her heart … it truly does seem, isn’t in acting.

Well, she’s got agents working for her. If she wanted to prove herself, her agent could’ve found other roles for her. You can succed at anything if you have the heart and the perseverance to achieve it. Emma doesn’t even have the DESIRE, it seems, to improve her acting. You’re very right about Emma not being afraid of the camera. I’d wager that was quite a big part of the reason why she was picked for the role of Hermione. A) She had a cute little face, B) She was naturally bossy, arrogant, and cheeky — and adults undoubtedly found this adorable C) Her hair could be bushy; D) She and Rupert and Dan got along well. These, I’m convinced, were the main reasons why she was picked. Not because she had any awesome acting skills. SHE WAS 11 YEARS OLD AND WAS PICKED FROM HER SCHOOL!

Oh gawd blimey, where to start. Because this will always be about opinions, I’ll start with J-Lo, Li-Lo, Jennifer Aniston, Anna Poppelwell (”we had a little trouble along the way” - said with about as much emotion as a wet tea towell). There are plenty more I can think of but I wanna say something else.
There are many ‘actresses’ and ‘actors’ out there who could do with some formal lessons, or some grittier roles to help develop them. I thik Emma needs formal training and grittier roles. Alfonso Curaon had said he wanted to work with her again too, so maybe that’s a future avenue for her.
But Emma Thompson admitted once that as a teenager she was awful at acting and couldn’t take to it at all. She went off to Cambridge university before getting formal training and didn’t really develop in her craft until her late 20’s. She has since gone on to win two Oscars.
Now before you get your knickers in a twist - I’m NOT saying Emma Watson will one day emulate Emma Thompson. I AM saying let’s wait and see. Give her another decade to see if she is one of those late bloomers.

Jennifer Aniston is a good actress (she’s not the best but she’s still grand) Jennifer Lopez is actually a great actress. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like her, i think shes a diva and very annoying but if you have seen “Enough” or that film with Richard Gere about the dancing she’s actually quite a good actress. Her ‘acting’ hasn’t ruined the films for me at all. I don’t think she’s been great except in POA but neither do I think she’s a bad as you claim. Opinions seem to vary from person-to-person, and critic-to-critic on this topic. There’s nothing unusual about that (Dan and Rupert have also had their fair share of critics though - Rupert is by far my favourite but I’ve read bad reviews of his acting too). Emma certainly polarises opinion more than Dan and Rupert among the fans. Yes, the eyebrows and breathy talking are certainly annoying at times, at other times it’s how Hermione is. Hermione is described as having a shrill voice, of nagging, over-reacting. The real tests will come in the final installments.
But as much as there are ‘actors’ I don’t rate, I prefer to save my vitiole for politicians and terrorists, not a bleedin’ Harry Potter person who has yet to bloom.

Emmma is going to tell good bye the actress career when she is 18 years old.I’m sorry I tell but it’s the truth. she doesn’t want to be the girl of harry potter.And when she is 18 years she’ll go to pubs and discos and we see her in rehab soon.

A double and a stand-in basically do the same thing. They rehearse the scene with the director who will film it so he can see what it looks like and the director of photography can set up the lighting. The sad thing is Emma gets the script near the beginning of shooting but the double has to learn it that morning.
While filming the OOTP the director and producers were filming the doubles rehearse the scene where Seamus and Harry argue, so they could show it too the actors to give them a guide line of how they wanted the scene to play out. Apparently the director and producers were unhappy with Devon’s (Seamus) performance saying they would re-shoot it at a later date but they didn’t. A lot of people (crew, etc.) were saying that they preferred the doubles performance.
I personally don’t think this is true-its rubbish and crap. Why would someone who works on the crew publically say that he thinks Emma’s slow and she’s a horrible actor?

If she was really that bad an actress, she wouldn’t get nominated for any awards, she wouldn’t win any awards-teens and kids love her, not only because she’s very pretty, because she’s a good actress. I have to admit, her eyebrows do go wild sometimes when she’s trying to convey emotions. All I’m trying to say is-IF EMMA WASN’T A GOOD ACTRESS FROM THE BEGINNING, THEY WOULDN’T HAVE HIRED HER! They went to loads of schools to pick Hermione, and they chose her because she had some acting skills. Also, after PoA, her contract was up, if they producers didn’t like her acting and thought she was crap, THEY WOULDN’T HAVE EXTENDED HER CONTRACT, if she was that bad an actress, it would have made the movies horrible, so they must love her.
Also, she was slow to learn her lines? She got an A on almost or every one of her tests last year, she’s in no way slow or incapable to learn her lines. The Source of this article is probably a drama queen/king, whoever that phoenix bitch is and is an Emma hater.

Opinions on Emma’s acting have always been divided. Same goes for Dan and Rupert. Emma probably polarises opinion more than most because shes the ony girl of the trio. But it still proves nothing as t whether this ‘report’ is true or not.
These same set rumour mills claimed that Emma wanted to quit the series a couple of years back.
Furthermore, doubles do not have to remember lines. They do read the scripts for action sequences but they don’t actually have to learn the lines. They are just directed as to positioning and stunts.

According to someone on the forums, the guy who is supposedly from the set was actually talking about Devon Murray (Seamus), and not Emma at all. But I agree with some of what you’ve said Natasha, the whole thing reeks of someone desperate to have a swipe at Emma, by posting hearsay as if it’s news.
natasha, that was a quote from an ongoing disucssion. He was answering questions and said he didn’t have any HBP news to post. Someone had asked him about Emma, Rupert and Bonnie and how they are onset. So he answered those questions. He also said that Bonnie wasn’t the Ginny he always pictured, so I don’t get why some of you are saying he’s a Bonnie fan just because he doesn’t think Emma can act. I love Emma too, but honestly, she needs to get some lessons.

Honestly, I think I’d still love Emma if she’d walk around in a potato bag and said “I’m dumb”. I´m a fan of Emma… but I know Dan and Rupert to be better actors… if she doesn´t continue on acting… well she´s pretty much set for life and with brains and grades enough to get into universities that most people wouldn´t even get their foot in… like some of her costars. I agree, Dan was a lot better in OOTP and even though he’s a poor actor he’s getting better and he is still 100 times better then Emma, who is simply awful. Its sad really. She should ahould have been fired years ago when she was thinking of quitting. All she does is say her lines. She obviously doesn’t want to be there anymore coz she’s not even trying to act. She’s not putting in any effort. She wanted to quit and go to college full time a couple of years ago. That would have been the smarter choice. Perhaps some acting lessons…lol.

It’s obvious Emma isn’t the best actress, that’s not in dispute. Most actors and actresses need years of experience before they become critically acclaimed and some are slower at developing than others. Emma is obviously a slow developer. She’s not the first and won’t be the last.
BUT none of that means that what this UNTRUSTWORTHY ‘insider’ (if indeed that what he is) says is genuine with regards to other crew members or about David Yates, or Devon Murray for that matter.
Someone who would break the confidence and discretion that crew members are supposed to adhere to can hardly be trusted in anything they say.

oh my god thank you! I agree so much. Emma is possibly the worst actress ever. It is completely obvious shes acting, all she does is say her lines really and breath a lot. OMG the scene where she is looking out the window and saying they need a new DADA teacher, is the worst acting I have ever seen in my life! Why didn’t Yates re-do that scene until she got it right! The only one I think that really fools me into thinking he’s the character is Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley..he totally becomes Ron. Emma sort of became Hermione in POA but that was only because Alfonso is a great director.

1.) Emma’s Double might be faster as remembering lines but how do we know that? She is a DOUBLE! As in STUNT DOUBLE! They do stunts not rehearse lines!
2.) Everyone who talked about David Yates during an interview all had wonderful things to say about him…things such as calm, collected, and quiet. Why would a directer refer to one of his actors as a B***H? Especially knowing, it might get on the internet?
3.) I’m not sure if any of you have notice but Emma is immoral! That eyeborw thing will become she trademark. Just as LL Cool J is known for licking his lips and Madonna is known for being a Material Girl. Emma will always be known for doing that eyebrow thing! And honey if you got it flaunt it!

Emma’s not a great actress and won’t be for quite some time if she doesn’t branch out a bit more and get some formal training, but it’s easy to say that without so much bile and vitirole if you’re not consumed with an obsessive hatred of someone (and if you’re not jealous of their looks and money).

She seemed pretty good in Ballet Shoes. In fact I think the scene where she was playing an actress and had to put emotion in the part where she was telling her brother she would write to him, well I think it was very good acting. Also I think she was great in PoA, which is my favorite of the HP films. I think all three of the trio are very good and have grown in their acting skills. I also believe they have room to grow but that is a good thing. I look forward to seeing all three of them in acting roles later in life.

there are two diffrent typs of double´s, the stuntdouble and the “bodydouble”. the bodydoubles will be frequently used in scenes, where you can see the actors only from behind.

How can some you guys say you are an Emma fan if you don’t think she’s a good actress? She’s not famous for anything other than her acting. She doesn’t have a clothing line, she’s not a musician, she doesn’t have perfume…are you guys Emma fans because you just think she’s hot?
I am a major Emma fan, and I think she’s a good actress. Like I said, even though her eyebrows do speak for her sometimes, I personally like her acting style, I’m really into her using her eyebrows when she talks. Actors all have different abilities…she acts with her eyebrows, Rupert has been noted for acting with his eyes(as said by Julie Walters when she did an interview for “Driving Lesson.”-but Rupert has been praised for that. Her eyebrows sort of have become her trademark(like someone said on here), that’s the #1 think people talk about when they talk about her acting. I’m not into those really famous actors who’ve won tons of awards, I like the new up-and-comers that are good, but still can do better. I think Emma will have a career ahead of her, I think she’ll get better(if she does take acting lessons or not)-she’ll learn more as she acts more.

Emma seems like a nice person, smart funny etc… but I am sorry if you think she is good at acting you are blind. She is possibly the worst actress I have ever ever seen. The eyebrow thing makes her acting worse by the way, not better. She looks too much at the camera, is obviously just saying her lines generically, not even trying to become the character. She is NOTHING like Hermione. All she does is say her lines. She can’t get away with that crap in DH, she has to get better soon or she’ll be fired because Hermione does a lot of screaming and crying in DH. Emma is going to be crap at that.

Actually she’s pretty good with dramatic screaming and crying coz they’re easy too pull off. It’s the subtle emotions which she can’t do, and in those moments, she go eye-brow crazy…she really should be a theatre actress
FINALLY! FINALLY SOMEONE HAS TOLD THE TRUTH OUT LOUD ABOUT EMMA’S ACTING AS HERMIONE! She needs to be told to stop freaking hyperventalating whenever she speaks! My gosh… I know that the source is usually claerssified as reliable, but I find it extremely unprofessional to let go such comments in public. It is disrespectful towards Emma - whatever way her acting is considered by us. I would feel ashamed of myself if I had given such a statement in a public forum. This is why I find it hard to believe this is true. And then the learning lines by heart. I don’t know, it just sounds wrong… Someone like her, who gives the impression to be serious about evything she does, why should she do that? I don’t get it.
Of course, Emma’s acting is not the best in the world, I think we all know that. Nevertheless, considering her as a slut is far beyond what should be discussed here. I don’t think that anyone of us has got the right to judge her that way - no one knows her well enoug to do so.
I think Emma has potential and unlike most people here, I actually think that she improved immensely in the last film.
Why does she not follow up more projects? I sometimes wonder whether some people here went to school. I think it is incredible what Emma manages outside of Harry Potter. The filming takes a very long time, but nevertheless she shows very good results in school. That doesn’t come from nowhere. And I don’t know whether I’m only imagining it, but I always had the impression that she wanted to continue her studies later on as well, so she really needs these results. It’s not very surprising that she doesn’t accept any other projects. She has got enough on her plate without that. I agree with you that she should do more acting outside of school to gain in experience and put herself into other roles, it would certainly help her acting.
I can only repeat myself. I doubt she will ever reach up very high, and maybe she will disappear again after the Potter films. Who knows? But still… I have certain doubts that a member of a crew would spread something like this all around the world. It’s just completely unprofessional, which is why I think this is somewhat hard to believe.

I think Emma isn’t so good actress, but like Kris wrote, she has to go to school too! And it’s hard for my to just handell school, so I can only imagine what kind of pressure Emma has! So Go EMMA!

I like Emma, I really do. I think she’s lovely and can be quite charming in interviews. I also think that many of her good reviews are based on her looks not her ability. She is far too interested in using her eyebrows to do her acting for her and seems to think that breathing very heavily (as if she’d just run a great distance) is a very good way to express just about anything. She really isn’t a good actor and I fear she is starting to believe her own press and will never improve. I watched ‘Ballet Shoes’ fully believing that I would find her skills quite good when she is not playing Hermione. I was wrong. It’s not that she can’t play Hermione well. It’s that she can’t act well. It takes more than good looks and charm to make a good actress.
Um…are you seriously threatening to tell on us? Please look at what you wrote. How seriously do you expect us to take you? By the way, we aren’t criticizing Emma. We are criticizing her acting. If she hope to do this for a while longer she needs to get used to it and not just listen to those who praise her. And if you truly are her friend you would encourage her to work to improve. If what you are doing is what you consider love and friendship, I, for one, am very grateful that you are not one of mine.
