MTV EXCLUSIVE: Rupert CHERRYBOMB PICS!
In the space between Harry Potter films, the young actors who play the trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione have been trying to cram as much non-wizarding world work on their resumes as possible — to prevent typecasting when they grow up. Dan Radcliffe, for instance, is starring in the controversial play “Equus” on Broadway. But Rupert Grint, who plays Harry’s best bud Ron Wesley, is trying to Radcliffe one step further — by taking on violent roles in the independent films “Wild Target” (which he just started) and “Cherry Bomb” (which he just finished).

“My character Malacy [in 'Cherrybomb'] works at a leisure center in Belfast,” Grint explained. “It’s not really a proper job, but this girl Michelle is my boss’ daughter. She’s really exotic and fashionable and she gets his attention, along with his friend Luke, and she starts this crazy competition thing between them.” In order to impress Michelle (who is played by Kimberley Nixon), the two guys start trying to one-up each other, first by going to a club and trying to dance with her, then by pulling stunts like stealing a car, and then things escalate from there. “Usually, Malachy doesn’t get the girl,” Grint said. “Luke is more of the ladies’ man, but he’s a bit more dodgy. Malachy isn’t a geek, he’s a bit of a thug, but he starts off as basically a good kid. He goes to work, he has a good relationship with his parents, but he’s got some bad influences, so he gets into a bit of trouble.”
Because Grint’s character is trying to be a bad boy to impress the girl, he loses himself in that — “she likes that, so she likes him.” Stealing a car wasn’t that big of a leap, especially because all he has to do is swipe the keys. “Why do my movies always involve illegal things with cars?” he laughed, referring to his last independent film “Driving Lessons”and the infamous flying car from Harry Potter. “I’m not that into driving that I’d ever actually steal a car,” he laughed. “Never.”
Grint got a “little love scene” that’s a little more adult than the one he had in “Driving Lessons,” he said, “which was quite awkward to film, with the whole crew watching. They’re in bed!” But the real adult subject matter, Grint said, is what happens afterwards — which he didn’t want to spoil. “It gets quite serious,” he said. “It gets a bit crazy. Really violent and out of hand and lethal at the end.”
But delving into the more mature material wasn’t the hardest part for Grint — it was the Belfast accent. “It’s a mishmash of all sorts of different accents,” he said. “I got the vocal coach to make me a CD of all the lines and I put that on my iPod, and that really helps, to learn the vowel sounds. Otherwise, I’d pick it up from the crew, sine they were all local.” Only having one week of rehearsals also put the pressure on. “On Harry Potter, we do a scene every few days, and this was like 12 scenes a day,” Grint said. “It’s a much tougher shoot, really, and quite tiring, but it’s good, to be at this much faster pacce. I prefer it to the waiting around. You’re always moving about. And at least I’m playing such a cool, different character that I’ve never done before. It’s nice to get to act like you’re more confident, even for a little bit.”

You’re right he should be on the a-list…NOT. Most of the people on those lists are overrated anyway. The a-list changes so frequently and people are booted off (generally because they wind up going insane from the press), you’re guaranteed to work longer when you fly under the radar. To be on the a-list you have to wear designer clothes, do big budget films and have to fill the role of what people want to see to be on those lists.
Then you’ve got people like Gary Oldman and David Thewlis who do not pop up on these lists and have had substantial careers and are phenomenal actors. In the end-being on the a-list doesn’t equal talent, just charisma. Dan’s been lucky to be on the a-list and do substantial projects like My Boy Jack and Equus, but Emma really hasn’t done anything of real subtance, her time will be short lived.
Rupert has done some great films outside of HP and he seems really content to not be in the spotlight and just be able to do what he loves. He may not be on moviephone’s hottest star’s list but I’m fine with that, because I’ll get to see him do great films instead.
Don’t flaunt Dan and Em’s a-list status-it doesn’t say anything about talent.
And by Emma’s time on the list will be short lived, I mean if she doesn’t take an interesting role of some kind soon. Someone else made a great point on this site, she talks about how she wants to focus on school, doing stuff outside of HP and stay out of the public eye, but she seems to be out there a lot.

Rupert is the most talented actor of the trio and that is pretty much a fact (it’s discussed often enough.) Dan isn’t naturally a fantastic actor but is working hard and improving. Emma however, has very little talent and shows little interest in improving.

Agree with Jane 100%. I have very little admiration for Emma Watson. I find her comments to be very hypocritical and contradictory.
First, she says she hates being called a ‘celebrity’ by the public and the media. However, suprise, surpise! You see her rubbing shoulders with other celebrities in countless high-profile ‘I’m so famous, look at me!’ events, dinner parties, fashion shows etc.
Next, she mentioned time and again about wanting to be taken seriously as an actress and hopes she’ll be given a chance by other filmmakers and directors to display her talents through various different film projects. But then again, you don’t hear about her signing up for new projects. Isn’t she currently on a gap year? I’m a true Dan fan but I’m realistic to realise that Rupert will be the Harrison Ford of the trio easily. Emma will be more a fashion icon, Dan will disappear and probably carry on writing or do directing because he won’t be able to get an acting job that will see any returns and that makes a career at the end of the day. For me, who’s loved Dan since the beginning, it breaks my heart to say but it’s true.
But all the Dan-hating Rupert fans must realise about Dan is that he doesn’t want to be famous as some of you keep claiming!! He’s only visible when he’s promoting or performing AS HE IS NOW IN EQUUS!!! Before now, Rupert apart from Driving Lessons, hasn’t done anything outside Potter so what can the media write about?? It’s the media who keep writing and making things up about Dan and you say it’s Dan who wants all the attention which is CRAP AND UNFAIR.

Danfan, please I’m begging you, you’re making a fool of yourself. I’m only into Harry Potter because of Dan but he will not last after Potter. Rupert is modern, appeals to all types of people, girls worship him, and the perfect expressive face and will easily make a career after Potter, (although he has got one of the best agents in the UK which helps and will have to step up in interviews), but Dan is more intellectual and off-the-wall, and people don’t like anyone who’s different and he isn’t an engaging actor.
Now I’ve bigged up Mr. Grint, now if you Rupert fans can’t say anything nice about Mr. Radcliffe, DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. Why he gets so much stick from ’some’ Rupert fans is beyond me? Who did he kill? And if you know he’s gonna wipe the floor with Dan, let us Dan fans lap up the attention while we can!!

I just wanted to ask you something, Julie. You really think Dan will disappear ? I think he will have a very very successful acting career… in the theatre. Oh, he’ll probably do some writing and directing from time to time, but really… I think his place is in the theatre.
Just from what I’ve seen him do in Equus and the echos we’ve had from people who has seen him on Broadway make it pretty clear. Whereas I think Rupe will have an acting career on screen, Emma will become a fashion model/icon and Dan will be a comedian.
Just give him time… he’ll come around, almost every serious critic says it.
Well, if you employ three fantastic looking leads, throw in sex and violence, and add the trending clothes, can’t fail really can you?
Before we all write-off Dan, I hope Rupert fans have read the critics review of Dan in Equus in New York, (which I know you haven’t) but most importantly the views of the PAYING PUBLIC, have been 99.9% BRILLIANT, yes BRILLIANT, sorry to burst your bubble but it’s true, credit where credit’s due but I guess ignorance is bliss, or convenient.
And the recent pictures of Dan have shown he’s grown into an extremely handsome young man, with the most incredible eyes and if you don’t agree, well, we’re obviously not on the same planet.
I don’t have to be a fan of someone to think they’re good-looking and Rupert is, but where’s the personality, he hasn’t got one? For me, there needs to be more than just a pretty face!!
Anyway, we’ll all soon be going our seperate ways after Potter, you can have Rupert, I stick with Dan.
P.S: I would urge everyone, (if they can), to see Equus. Your contempt for Dan may change when you see how good he is in it and how brilliant the production is. (Wasting my time I know).

Hm, I’m suprised. A Dan fan was able to politely praise Rupert while also defending and praising Dan. I’m not being sarcastic, Julie, but you do make an intersting point. I agree that Dan will probably not last after the Potter films, ’cause that’s what made him a star. Also, I do agree that we Rupert fans should slightly back off Dan ( and when I say Rupert Fans, I’m referring to myself and others on this site). The only arguement I have is that Rupert fans don’t ALWAYS take it out on Dan. Most of the time, but not all the time.
